課程概述 |
This course is designed to provide students with an overview of approaches in teaching English as a foreign language. You will learn about the theoretical foundations and instructional practices in second/foreign language teaching and work in small groups to demonstrate various teaching methods and techniques. |
課程目標 |
You will also become familiar with the current English textbooks used in junior and senior high schools and reflect upon your own philosophy and beliefs about teaching English in Taiwan. |

In this course, you are required to keep a journal in which you record your thoughts about your teaching and/or learning experiences during the semester. In addition, you need to reflect on and connect the teaching methods and materials discussed with your own experiences. |

Resource sharing:
In addition to familiarizing you with the current teaching practices, one of the goals of this course is to create a supportive learning environment in which we collaborate and cooperate with one another as we strive to become more knowledgeable English language teachers. Moreover, we all have our different strengths and experiences. Therefore, as a group, we will share insights and resources. Each of you will share one useful teaching resource website (it could be about lesson planning or various teaching activities). You will provide the link and a brief explanation of the content and your evaluation of the website, in terms of its usefulness, advantages and disadvantages. Each student will sign up for one of the following themes (grammar, reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary). We will use class discussion board for this activity |

Activity demonstration |

In the second half of the class, we will discuss a number of different topics (teaching grammar, reading, speaking, etc..). You will give a quick demonstration of a useful teaching activity (8 minutes). You will lead the class and use your classmates as students. |

Discussion leader & Presentation |
20% |
In this semester, you will play the role of a discussion leader once. In the first half part of the semester, a small group of students (2-3) will be responsible for leading and facilitating class discussion of reading materials. Your group needs to give a brief (5-8 minute) demonstration of the methodology described in the assigned chapters (i.e.: TPR). The goal of the demonstration is to show a classroom which utilizes the methodology discussed. After the demonstration, your group will also give a presentation of the chapter and lead the group discussion for the material your group select. Presentation on the chapters should be approximately (8-10 minutes) and plan a 10-15 minutes class discussion activity. The goal of this activity is to help the class members to better understand, interpret, and think more critically about the texts. |

Being on time and active participation are a critical part of this course. Also, you are expected be respectful to your instructor and fellow students by meeting all class requirements. |
